Marty was raised on a farm in Cullman, Alabama. In June 1975, he joined the US Air Force and, after basic training and tech school, was sent to Kadena Air Force Base on island of Okinawa, Japan. After being invited to church by a fellow GI, he was saved under the ministry of BIMI Missionary Jim Kennard. Marty later served as a chaplain with a national guard mechanized infantry battalion.
After military service, Marty attended Tennessee Temple University, where he met and married his wife Susan, formerly of Hickory, North Carolina. God blessed them with three sons - Chase, David, and Chris - who are now grown men with families of their own. The Basingers have seven grandchildren.
After nearly ten years of planting a church in Yokosuka, Japan, the Basingers turned the church over to national leadership and returned home for health reasons. Marty then served as a dean and teacher at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, and pastored churches in Minnesota and Georgia. He and Susan have resided in the Gainesville, Florida area for ten years where he now pastors Calvary Baptist Church in Alachua.
